I just keep singing all the songs and feeling all the feelings. As you may know, I went and saw the new movie yesterday and since then I have been talking about it practically nonstop, have listened to the movie soundtrack multiple times and have watched part of the 25th anniversary concert.
Les Mis has been one of my favourite musicals for many years and I know most of the songs off by heart and those I don’t know off by heart I can still pretty much sing along with word for word. After I first saw the 25th anniversary concert I think I played it at least 2-3 times a week for a few months I loved it so much!
So I’m a bit of a fan and now want to quickly talk about the movie. I loved the movie…it was intense and raw, the scenes beautiful and heartbreaking. I loved how God moved throughout the movie, I loved how the themes of grace and mercy were shown so poignantly.
Hugh jackman was incredible and I was absolutely bawling my eyes out by the end because of his performance. He was so beautiful and you could ‘feel’ all his pain and joy and sorrow. I found his singing hard to get used to straight away (Alfie boe…oh man!) but it was raw and wonderful. Marius was incredible and his song ‘empty chairs’…wow! Fantine was also amazing and I have never heard ‘I dreamed a dream’ sung with so much emotion. And everyone else was excellent too. Fantastic casting.
It was a little disconcerting knowing the songs so well and having them changed or shortened and parts missed out but I guess that can be expected in a movie! I absolutely loved the new song ‘Suddenly’ though! So so so beautiful!!
Enjolras…he is so often my favourite character and I did love him in this but I feel no one can live up to my absolute love for Ramin karimloo! And I was sad they cut some of his lines :( but I loved seeing the whole battle strategies come to life as I hadnt ever got the whole effect of that before.
The biggest disappoint with the movie i feel, was Eponine. They cut so many of her lines in songs and some talking parts and even ‘on my own’ and ‘a little fall of rain’ didn’t feel as strong and poignant. I love the character of Eponine so much and she is often the character I tend to relate to the most and I feel a little sad that she wasnt given a chance to break our hearts!
But I’m going to watch it again probably next week and so it will be interesting to see it again knowing what to expect and I won’t be so shocked that parts are missed or ‘on my own’ is sung early lol! ;P
All in all—such an amazing movie of feels and wonderfulness and this fangirl is very very happy :D
Let me know what you thought?
Ps: the ending? Where Valjean sings “Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die, I’ll obey, I will try”…. Tears, oh so many tears. Even listening to it on the soundtrack I cried.
